Home made vs Manufacture

Are there more home made float tanks than manufactured float tanks in North America?

Why do people choose to build rather than buy a float tank?

Do you think building your own is part of the journey/fun?

I dont know.

Why do people choose to build rather than buy a float tank?

I am building a tank so that others can do so from inexpensive, off-the-shelf parts and freely available construction plans. I also hope to do some prison outreach at some point and low cost of manufacturing will be a must.

Do you think building your own is of the journey/fun?

In a way it is, but the real pioneering work was done by Lilly. I mean, he started with submersion and oxygen masks and evolved it to use Epsom salts. I would say that everything since then is just imitating his model. He did all the hard work.

And of course, beyond his actual construction, the very interest in answering a research question led to the idea in the first place.

I do think Ocean Front Floatation is certainly doing some impressive evolutions of the idea of floatation. But of course, most of the work is done by our Inner Intelligence anyway.

a) There's probably no practical way of knowing this.
b) It's less expensive!!!* And because they can.
c) For those that like to build things and have the time, Yes.

Though I bet most home builders don't factor in the value of their own time in the final price tag of their tank. When someone tells me they built a tank for $1500, I tend to think they spent that much or more in labor.

I have a 7' x 4' tank I built for \$150.00 using 1.25 ply and 1.5 ply to build walls with foam insulation. The inside is covered in plastic, with heavy liner. I use a 130watt water bed heater to maintain temp, and 1000 watt to heat quickly (room temp to 95 in a few hours). The tolal cost with tank, salt, custom lighting, sound system, and small pool pump that can turn the entire tank over in 15 minutes is \$947.00 I looked at comercial tanks and could not find one under several thousand. Yea a lot of labor was used but it was a week end to build the tank and an hour here and there.
